Columnar activated carbon, also known as granular activated carbon (GAC) or granulated activated carbon, is a highly porous and adsorbent material widely used in various applications for the purification and treatment of air and water. It is a type of activated carbon that is processed and shaped into cylindrical or granular particles, which provides a large surface area for adsorption.

Activation Process: Activated carbon is created from carbonaceous materials like coal, wood, coconut shells, or other organic substances. The activation process involves heating these materials to high temperatures in the presence of steam or air, which creates a network of pores and increases the carbon's surface area. The resulting product is extremely porous and has a vast number of tiny adsorption sites.

Physical Properties: Columnar activated carbon comes in the form of cylindrical or granular particles. These particles vary in size, typically ranging from 0.2 to 5 millimeters in diameter. The choice of particle size is determined by the specific application.

Porous Structure: The porosity of columnar activated carbon is a key feature. It consists of both micro-pores (smaller than 2 nm in diameter) and macro-pores (larger than 50 nm in diameter). This extensive pore structure is essential for its adsorption capacity.

Adsorption Capacity: The primary function of columnar activated carbon is adsorption. It effectively removes impurities and contaminants from gases and liquids by attracting and trapping molecules on its surface. It is highly effective in adsorbing a wide range of substances, including organic compounds, chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and odor-causing compounds.

Applications:

Water Treatment: Columnar activated carbon is commonly used in water treatment systems to remove taste, odor, chlorine, and a variety of organic and inorganic contaminants. It can be found in water purification filters and systems.

Air Purification: It is utilized in air filtration systems to eliminate volatile organic compounds, noxious gases, and particulate matter from the air.

Chemical Processing: Columnar activated carbon is used in chemical processes for the purification of chemicals, removal of impurities, and recovery of valuable compounds.
